|08:17 pm - Silly toy: Calculate your gas mileage|
With gas prices rising so fast, I got to thinking about buying another car, maybe with better mileage. Then I thought maybe I should look into how much I would really save. Here's a little gas mileage comparison calculator that, if you tell it the mileage you're currently getting, approximately how many miles you drive a day, and what's the average price of gas (it defaults to $3.00), it will tell you how much you would save if you got a car with 5, 10, and 15 more miles per gallon, and compares your mileage with the top 10 selling cars in America.
It will also estimate how much you pay for gas per day, month, and year.
The Honda Civic is looking better and better every day.
Let me know if it works for you. I'd be interested in what you have to say.
P.S. This will likely really piss you off if you own a Dodge Ram 4WD Pickup.

bwa-ha-ha-ha I have better mileage than all of the top 10 selling cars, I love my car so much <3
I have a honda civic. I can't tell you how glad I am that I do since I've been paying $3 per gallon for so long that I don't remember the last time I paid less. Not only is the gas mileage awesome, it is also a great sized car to park and it runs great. Plus, as a short woman, it is designed so that I can easily see all around me with minimum blind spots. My civic kicks butt.
*sniggers* I own something with equivalent gas mileage (a Scion xA), so I know I'm doing well. Of course I was more than spiffed out that it got over 38 mpg over Raton Pass between New Mexico and Colorado *pats car*.
Of course I'm more worried about this E85 stuff they are trying to promote here (gas mixed with more ethanol).
Buy another car? What 5 in your household aint hacking it?
I would carry over the colors to the prices on the comparison chart, and change the formatting for negatives to ($x.xx) in red. Also align=right your numeric columns.
I would also suggest adding an input field for a comparison car, so if someone wanted to put they have current car (like you have), and then another car they are looking at they could get the differences between those two mileages.
In the column header I would also extrapolate out how many miles that represents as a mental check for people to see if they are close. People are more likely to have an idea of what they drive in a month than a day, so under month and year, just show what the daily figure represents.
I also like how text looks bolded, like black, Red,and darker Green-008000.
But thats just me.
And you need an image of an la freeway... just for good measure. Bonus points for heat waves. Maybe something retro cool like this one.

All our cars rate better than all of those, except for the Honda... yay. I knew we were getting good mileage, but still :)
My Neon gets pretty decent milage. There are definitely times when I miss my 7.2L cars
, but current gas prices quickly bring me back to reality.
